I have been fascinated with preparedness since I was much younger.

For those who would like a list of things that I carry across the wallet, belt pouch, messenger bag, and a container in my car, here it is:

return for reward information, knife, first aid, music player, notepad+pens, cellphone, in-ear headphones, gps, cellular internet, cash, camera, rugged convertible, flashlight+batteries, compass, umbrella. chargers. second car key (esp for other people or others' car). duplicate destination info. cellular modem rugged convertible + gps + internet. hat, ear plugs, sunglasses. cables, usb stick with [todo, work, bookmarks, my documents], deodorant, mp3 player/computer, coins, nail clipper, multitool, cellphone charger, camera, radios, GPS

Bag contents:

pens, notepad, multitool, lighters (neck and windproof butane), knives, money, change

bottles of water, candy, food, gum, haircomb, clipper

bath paper, rope (thin and thick), duct tape, lock/windshield de-icer, headnet, bleach pen, zip bags, deodorant, sewing kit, umbrella, rain suit

trash bags, bag ties, fire extinguisher, tire inflator, sharpening stone, tire pressure,

compass, fuse set, jumper cable, radio (with time and alarm), flashlight, inverter, modulator, dc adaptor

in waterproof bag: beach shoes, t-shirt, socks, swimsuit, gloves

gas can, car ice scraper, bag of misc batteries

shovel, jumper cable, maps

cookware: plates, cups, spoons, forks, knives, spork, napkins, wet towels, plastic dining set, cooking pot/pan

first aid kit and first aid bag: napkins, cloth tape, wet napkins, alcohol, headnet, cough candy, TP, survival kit in a can

misc bag: keyrings, clothing stains pen, sharpening stone, compass, spork, deodorant stick, notepad, haircombs, compass+clock, batteries, wd-40 pen, in-ear headphones, marker, super glue, measuring tape

In contrast to the over-hyped and over-commercialized "preparedness" mentality, what I see lacking is everyday preparedness -- being able to take care of those seldom and sporadic events where you need to be prepared, but you only have the contents of your pocket or your car to rely upon.

I carry the following items in my wallet:

  • Return for reward information
  • Emergency pen
  • Just the minimum amount of necessary cards
  • No large amount of cash
  • Business cards (good for either business or to use instead of scrawling your number on a napkin for a girl)

I carry the following items in the pouch:

  • flashlight
  • wallet
  • cellphone
  • multitool
  • knife
  • pen
  • music player

  • tools
  • player cable
